This FAQ is meant to cover the most common questions I get e-mailed. Not that I don't like getting e-mail! Don't get me wrong! However, isn't it good to save us both a step?

Q: I see your site has cool scripts! How'd you do that?

A: All of SC3000.COM's "scripts" are custom written by myself using Allaire's ColdFusion product. ColdFusion is a tag-based Web application language (or scripting language if you prefer). But don't let me write a whole book here, because I really like Allaire's language and I could talk about it all day! Er, well, I'm not really that geeky, but anyway. Your best bet, if you want to learn more about this product, is to visit Allaire's Web site.

Q: Can I have some of your scripts for my site?

A: No. I wish I could turn them over, but SC3000.COM's scripts are all private and proprietary. There are, however, a lot of free CGI scripts out there that can do similar things. I tell most people to ask their ISP about cool technologies they can use on their Web sites.

Q: How did you build your [forum/Knowledge Tree/City Center/poll]?

A: Well, as mentioned previously, ColdFusion is used extensively, along with databases. Between ColdFusion and a database, just about anything can be accomplished. Well, except for getting your taxes done on time. The database I prefer is Microsoft's SQL Server, but I used Microsoft Access before, which works on low traffic sites.

Q: Can you build me some custom terrains for SimCity 3000?

A: Sorry! Not enough time in a day. While I'd love to fulfill terrain requests personally, you'll have to con someone at the forum to do a terrain, or check out Knowledge Neighborhood to find out how to roll your own.

Q: I lost my serial number, or my game crashed, or I don't have the manual! Can you please help me?

A: Nope. I simply don't have the resources or responsibility to serve as a EA/Maxis tech support guy. Please check out SC3000.COM's Help page for support options. They will direct you to the game's creators and their paid support technicians, who are authorized to help you with anything technical or related to sales. See them for new serial numbers, games manuals, problems, etc.

Q: What did you use to make your graphics?

A: I use Paint Shop Pro 7 (mainly for bitmaps) and Corel Xara (mainly for vector-based art). I flip a lot between both programs and copy data between the two. They work great for me. Nowadays, Paint Shop Pro 7 is getting good at vector graphics too.

Q: What HTML editor did you use to create your site?

A: Since I do a mix of ColdFusion programming and HTML, I use Allaire's ColdFusion Studio. However, I heartily recommend their similar product, called HomeSite. HomeSite is cheaper and doesn't include the ColdFusion programming support, but for HTML, you don't need that. For beginners, I always recommend Macromedia's Dreamweaver if a WYSIWGY tool is desired.

Q: Is your site the official SimCity site?

A: No, and you wouldn't believe how many people think it is. :-) While flattered, I have to set the record straight and tell you that Maxis (a division of Electronic Arts) runs the official SimCity site at www.simcity.com.

Q: Who is Maxis?

A: Have you been in a cave?!

Q: No really, who is Maxis?

A: They made SimCity. They are SimCity. Go play SimCity.

Q: Why did you decide to work at Maxis?

A: I was working at my desk back in Minnesota and suddenly everything went dark. Next thing I know, I'm in a cube in Walnut Creek, CA.

Q: Get real! Come on, be serious. Why work at Maxis?

A: I've always been a SimCity fan, and Maxis is such a great company. After dedicating half my life to SimCity, and interning at Maxis during the summer of 2000, and meeting a really great girl at Maxis, I just couldn't resist their offer. Plus, I like the fact that it doesn't get to 100 degrees below zero here. Mostly, I want to benefit Maxis any way I can. Joining their Web team was the best way for me to do that.

Q: How can I intern at Maxis?

A: The best place to go for EA's intern program is jobs.ea.com. You can sign up for their intern program, and request to be assigned to their Maxis studio! EA is a cool place to intern at too.

Got any questions you think should be on here? Let me know!
