Buildings inspired from landmarks #0412
Updated: 1/1/01 OS/platforms(s): All Versions: All

Contributor/author(s): Rand Huck, Joe Simpson, Tyler, Patrick Carroll, Carlos Issac, Mike Monagon, Ehimen Akhidenor, Pink Tulips, Margaret McCorkle, Mayor For-Life, Derrick Chen, David J. Snyder, Kwasi Cook, Wei Xiang, Renjie, Jonas To, Chris Ledermuller

Did you know that there are more "landmarks" in SimCity 3000 than are included in the landmark list? Here is a list of buildings that were supposedly inspired by other landmarks:

Aquilina Building: Design for a building in 1914. It never got built.

Baseball Stadium: Pacific Bell Park (San Francisco, CA) - The San Francisco Giant's new $600 million stadium, yet they are still doing the finishing touches on it. It opens on baseball's opening day in April.

Baseball Stadium: Pacific Bell Park (San Francisco, CA)

Biff's Athletic Club: 24 Hour Nautilus (Walnut Creek, CA) - there is actually little visual relation, since I (Wren) have walked by 24 Hour Nautilus many times. However, the club, which is actually on the ground floor of a larger building, may have been an insiration.

Bradbury Building: Bradbury Building (Los Angeles, CA)

Brooklyn Bridge: Actual Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn/New York)

Buses: Possibly modeled after San Francisco busses; the coloring looks a lot like BC Transit in Victoria, British Columbia.

City Hall: Rhode Island State House (Providence, RI)

City Hall, Asian Set: Legislative Council; Former High Court (Hong Kong)

College: Goff Highschool (Pawtucket, RI)

Corporate Ground Zero Plaza: 500 5th Ave. (New York, NY)

Creighton's Corporate Plaza, European set: Citizen's Bank Plaza (Providence, RI)

Federal Building: State Building (Oakland, CA) - Maxis took off chunks of this huge building, as well as changed the front courtyard.

Futu Ishii Plaza, Asian tileset: Shinjuku Park Tower (Tokyo, Japan)

Goodplace Arms: California in general - California's answer to the Brownstone.

Gray Matter Place: KOIN Tower (Portland, OR)

High tension power line water crossing: Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PGE) crossing of Carquinez Strait

Jadyn's Tower, Asian Set: Maybank Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Justin Brown Plaza: 1 New York Plaza (New York, NY)

Kate Foundation: 225 West Wacker Drive (Chicago, IL)

Kim Plaza, Asian set: Ritz Carlton Hotel (Hong Kong) - This building is within close proximity to the Bank of China Tower and the Hong Kong-Shanghai Bank Tower.

Kovachar Foundation: NEC Supertower (Tokyo, Japan)

Lansburgh Building: The former Lansburgh Department Store (Washington, D.C.)

Li, Liew, Liu Associates, Asian set: Old Bank of China building (Hong Kong)

Maxis Theater: Chicago Theater (Chicago, IL)

Medical Research Center: University of California (San Francisco, CA)

Miyazaki Foundation, Asian set: Hong Kong Convention & Exibition Centre's New Wing (Hong Kong)

Museum, Asian set: "Big Blue", a museum (England)

Pan Pacific Insurance, Asian set: Landmark Tower (Yokohama, Japan)

Shining Star Hi-Rise, Asian set: Peninsular Hotel, Hong Kong.

Silver Tower: Amoco Building (Chicago, IL), and/or 125 Broad Street (New York, NY)

Software Studio: Unknown name (Walnut Creek, CA) - This one is near Maxis' headquarters, though I (Wren Weburg) don't recall seeing it while I was in Walnut Creek.

Spicoli Center: Wells Fargo Center (San Francisco, CA)

Stock Exchange: New York Stock Exchange (New York, NY)

Stotic Arms Apartments and Arbor Plaza: buildings based in Chicago, IL

Strand Hotel, European set: Strand Palace Hotel (London England) - It's on a street called The Strand, hence the name.

Super Spur from the European set: Messeturm (Festival Tower) (Frankfurt, Germany)

Tameki Tower, Asian tileset: Central Plaza (Honk Kong, China)

Triangle Terrace: Home Building (San Francisco, CA) - The escalator you see at the bottom front of the building is in reality a subway station.

University: Harvard University (Cambridge, MA)

Mayor's House: Vanderbilt Mansion (Hyde Park, NY)

Wilkinson Tower: PSFS building (Philadelphia, PA) - Undergoing renovation in 2000, going from offices to a luxury hotel, though the "PSFS" on top will remain, as I believe it is now historically designated. The only difference on Wilkinson Tower from the Philadelphia landmark are the four letters are on the sign atop the tower.

Yingling Estate, Asian set: typical housing flats (Hong Kong)

Miscellaneous: California Plaza landmark (Walnut Creek, CA) - Maxis' current headquarters; area is actually incomplete. That is literally a small piece of a huge complex called Mt. Diablo Plaza. The two buildings combined make the tallest and largest building in Walnut Creek (much larger than their former building, 2 Theatre Square, 5 miles away in Orinda, CA).

If you have any additions for this list, you can e-mail wren@sc3000.com. Include the SimCity 3000 building name, the title of its inspirational structure if known, and its city and state/province (and country if outside the U.S.). Also include the discover's name. A description, if possible, is fine too.
